Concept
The Prairie Circle development is an arts-oriented cluster of homes and studios with a commons facility designed to serve the needs of its members and the city of Mineral Point at large. Our goal is not just to create a housing development, but also create a community that will enrich all of our lives.

The Development
The development covers a total of 19.89 acres and contains 16 residential lots with a possible total of 30 residential units. Two common ownership lots total 6.25 acres of land, with an additional 3.96 acres of land maintained as a wetland greenspace

Lots
Nine of the lots are zoned as single dwelling, while four lots can be either duplexes or single residences. Three of the lots are designed to contain three units, which can either be purchased individually with a 1/3 Fellowship vote, or purchased with the intention of renting out the units. All lots will be connected to the City Sewer system.

Conceptual Designs
To provide a guide and inspiration, conceptual designs for most lots will be completed by the developer. Purchasers can use these designs, work with the developer to modify them, bring in an architect to modify them, or even work with an architect independently to create a house in accordance with the Fellowship regulations.

The Commons

Included in the development are two common ownership lots. The first of these will have additional storage space for the residences, and a kennel service. For the other lot the current plan is to build a commons building which would include facilities and services for a variety of uses. An industrial kitchen and dining hall will be used for large gatherings, and a media room would provide a place for movies or watching football games. A tool shop would give people access to equipment that they would be able to use on personal projects. Office or studio space would be provided for residents who would prefer to have them located outside of the home but still close by. Health and relaxation facilities such as a sauna and exercise room will also be included with community involvement creating the possibility of having weekly Yoga or fitness classes.

Heavily based on independent programming, the commons building provides a place for any group or event a person wants to organize. The options for this facility and it's uses are unlimited.

This commons facility could be a non-profit organization, or a commercial venture that residents would be able to invest in. The goal of the commons facility is to provide a functional focal point for the development, and also to enhance the overall community resources of Mineral Point, integrating the development into the existing community.

Frank Lloyd Wright and the Prairie House and Usonian styles

Frank Lloyd Wright was born in Wisconsin and a mere 30 miles from Mineral Point he built his home and school, Taliesin in Spring Green. While updating his principles for modern times, the development takes great inspiration from his work, in particular the Prairie Home and Usonian styles. Characteristics of the Prairie House include band windows, low, hipped roofs with deep eaves, and a overall horizontal emphasis. Interior spaces treated not as seprate rooms but as adjoining spaces, so that light, air and vista permeate the whole building with a sense of unity. Common materials in the construction of the houses are stucco, brick, stone and unpainted wood, with decorative ornament minimal.
